Microsoft has started reminding Windows 7 users of end of support by sending on-screen reminders. Windows 7, one of the most popular and widely adopted Windows version ever will reach its end of support on January 14, 2020.
The on-screen reminder informs the user about the last day until when Microsoft will offer security updates and technical support. If you click on learn more it will take you to this dedicated page for Windows 7 end of support. Interestingly the reminder doesn’t talk about upgrading to Windows 10.
The page notes the following regarding what issues may happen if your PC is still on Windows 7 and the support has ended officially.
When Windows 7 reaches end of support on January 14, 2020, your computer will still function but Microsoft will no longer provide the following:
- Technical support for any issues
- Software updates
- Security updates or fixes
While you could continue to use your PC running Windows 7, without continued software and security updates, it will be at greater risk for viruses and malware. Going forward, the best way for you to stay secure is on Windows 10. And the best way to experience Windows 10 is on a new PC. While it is possible to install Windows 10 on your older device, it is not recommended.
Not all Windows 7 users may have received this notification so far but Microsoft will certainly let you know before the end of support date.
