What’s new in Windows Console in Windows 10 Fall Creators Update

Windows Console

Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (FCU) is set for the general availability on October 17th, 2017. For a detailed list of changes, new features and improvements, please visit this dedicated page.

For people who spend most of their time working on a Command line (second only to the browser) typing commands, Microsoft has introduced a number of improvements in the Fall Creators Update (FCU).

What’s New in Windows Console:

  • Windows Console Accessibility Improvements
  • Improved Text Rendering and VT Code support
  • New Default Color Scheme
  • Custom color schemes using ColorTool

One of the most visible improvements made to Windows Console in FCU is that Windows Console’s contents can now be read by Windows Narrator and any other screen-reader or tool that uses Windows UI Automation infrastructure (UIA).

Here is a quick video demonstration of this feature in action.

Microsoft has also made several important improvements to the Console’s text rendering and VT handling. Windows Console now renders vim color themes correctly and does a better job of reflowing text when the console window is resized.

For the first time in over 20 years, Windows users will see an improved and modernized console colors that render more clearly on modern high-resolution displays. This was done since the original deep navy blue renders far too dark on LCD screens, and many colors are oversaturated and contrast poorly. Learn more about it here.

Additionally, Windows Console now supports custom color schemes. This can be achieved using an open-source ColorTool to allow you to import custom color schemes into your Consoles.
